It’s National Marriage Week

This is “National Marriage Week.” United Families International, based in Mesa, provides this statement on the great value of marriage as the union on one man and one woman to society, in its book “The Marriage Advantage,” authored by Marcia Barlow:

Marriage is a unique, opposite-sex union with legal, social, economic and spiritual dimensions.

It is a fundamental and universal social institution and the mechanism bywhich every known society seeks to obtain for each child the love, attention and resources of a mother and a father. The happiness, development and productivity of a new generation are bound to the marriage and the family unit. The successful development of children is critical to the success and preservation of nations. Because of marriage’s essential role, states and nations have chosen to provide unique benefits and incentives to those who choose to be married.

There is now broad bipartisan recognition that healthy marriage affords substantial benefits for adults and their children. Stable marriage has a positive effect on the economic, emotional and psychological well-being of men and women and dramatically benefits the well-being of children. A wealth of social science research attests to this conclusion.

Efforts to uphold marriage between one man and one woman as the foundation for the family – the fundamental unit of society – should be supported and strengthened.

Families, communities and responsible governments should use all prudent means to encourage healthy, lawful marriage and to discourage pre-marital sex, out-of-wedlock childbearing, adultery, divorce and alternative family forms.

Marriage Leads to:

• Better health and greater longevity

• Less crime, less violence

• Safer homes

• Safer communities

• Less poverty, more wealth

• Healthier society

• Better intimate relations

• Less substance abuse and addiction

• Less hardship and better outcomes for children

• Less government, lower taxes

• More happiness

It Doesn’t Make Sense

By Cathi Herrod, President, Center for Arizona Policy

Governor Jan Brewer

Representative Debbie Lesko

Senator Nancy Barto

Senator Kimberly Yee

What do all these people have in common?

They’re passionately pro-life and – to Planned Parenthood’s great frustration – they’re women!

What’s more, these women represent only a small portion of the female pro-life leaders in Arizona.

It’s what is so special about the pro-life movement in our state. These pro-life champions care just as much about the woman walking into an abortion clinic as they do about the reborn child. It’s why our state has passed so many common sense health and safety standards for abortion clinics.

Sadly at every step along the way, the abortion industry, led by Planned Parenthood, has tried to block even the most basic rules.

Case in point: consider yesterday’s hearing in the House Reform and Human Services committee. Up for debate was the CAP-supported HB 2284, the Women’s Health Protection Act, sponsored by Rep. Lesko. I consider it a privilege to be able to have testified in support of this critically needed legislation.

Among other things, this bill would ensure abortion clinics are subject to the same inspections as every other medical facility in the state. Specifically, this would grant the epartment of Health the ability to inspect complaints at abortion clinics without being required to first warn the clinic.

Most people would be shocked to know that abortion clinics have a special carve out like this – especially when abortion providers have such a terrible track record of harming women and preborn children (see: Dr. Kermit Gosnell).

What I found most nonsensical about yesterday’s hearing for HB 2284 was the double-speak.

In one breath the president of Planned Parenthood testified that their organization cared for women. Yet in the very next breath, he stood opposed to protecting women from abusive practices at negligent abortion clinics.

Make no mistake about it – Dr. Kermit Gosnell was allowed to practice in Pennsylvania for so long precisely because the state did not properly inspect abortion clinics due to pro-abortion politics.

It’s imperative that we learn from this tragedy, and not allow hypocritical and dangerous politics to get in the way of our government fulfilling its most basic duty: protecting life.

The sad reality is that as Arizona law stands today, our state values the safety of women at an abortion clinic less than the safety of men and women at every other health care institution.

Thankfully, the Women’s Health Protection Act passed out of committee. There is still a long road ahead for this bill – and at some point, we may need your help by contacting your legislators in support of HB 2284. You can track the progress of this legislation using our Bill Tracker, and by “Liking” CAP on Facebook. Later today, we’ll post my testimony on our Facebook page.

Three Arizona Democrats Flee From Prior Obamacare Support

Barber, Kirkpatrick, Sinema Supported Obamacare, Now Want to Delay Effects Until After Reelection

PHOENIX – Robert Graham, chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, called out three Arizona Democrats in Congress for their efforts to blatantly postpone full Obamacare implementation until after their reelection. The three signed a letter to President Obama last week asking for delays until 2015 — after the November elections later this year in which all three Democrats are at very high risk of losing their seats to Republican challengers.

“These three cowards are afraid to admit they supported this faulty legislation, and now they want to run and hide their mistakes from voters,” said Arizona Republican Party Chairman Robert Graham. “You can’t fix the fundamental flaws of Obamacare — it would be like treating the symptoms instead of the disease — and the self-serving tactics of these liberal Democrats shirking their responsibility for this disaster is something voters deserve to hear about before they vote in November.”

Graham noted the three are following the national trend of congressional Democrats, who as a party gambled heavily on the Obamacare passage and are suffering the consequences of the now-failed implementation. Many of those House Democrats lost their seats in 2010, and in 2014 the full force of the Obamacare train wreck will motivate voters to replace them with Republicans.

“Arizona voters are in a unique position with these three competitive seats to voice their firm opposition to Obamacare by sending Republicans to Congress who will fight for taxpayers, small businesses, and families looking forward to a more prosperous future,” Graham added.

Multi-Millionaire Worsley Hits up Constituents for Money, Calls Conservative Opponent ‘Extremist’

Arizona Senator Bob Worsley (R-Mesa) — the man who called Arizona a “police state” — is now boiling over because someone has the gaul to run against him in the Republican Primary later this year. That opponent is Dr. Ralph Heap, a Mesa doctor, and a conservative who spoke at the East Valley Tea Party meeting Feb. 10th. It appears that anyone opposing Worsley is now labeled an “extremist” by the senator, who said:

Some of you may know that I will be facing an opponent in the upcoming Republican primary election for the Arizona State Senate in Legislative District 25 – Mesa.  This individual was recruited to challenge me, and will fight to return extreme policies to our State.  It was these policies that compelled me to run for office in the first place.  I ran on a platform promising to “elevate” Mesa and the dialogue at the State Capitol.  I’m proud to announce that we have made great progress!

As we have reminded Worsley before, if he wants to identify “extreme policies,” he should look at the Democrats’ side of the aisle.

The strident Worsley is a freshman senator and amnesty advocate. He denounced his 2012 primary opponent, Russell Pearce, who is an advocate of the rule of law and border enforcement. And because Arizona’s legislature has acted to protect the southern border, Worsley called Arizona a “police state.” Worsley’s money, influence, and negative campaigning felled the long-time patriot Russell in the 2012 primary. And Mesa misses Pearce’s solid representation.

But there is more Worsley news. The multi-, multi-millionaire is hitting up his Mesa constituents to support him, a multi-millionaire, in his re-election campaign. When in fact the cost of running for legislature is pocket change for a man of Worsley’s immense wealth. Worsley made his fortune on SkyMall, the in-flight catalog, and numerous other investments. He owns a mansion in Mesa and a huge cabin in the White Mountains, with logs trucked in from British Columbia.

Left Stream Media’s Olympic Narrative: Sochi Games are the ‘Homophobic’ Games

Left-stream media shills wasted no time bitterly attacking Russia for its tough stance against radical homosexual activism. Before the competition had even begun, NBC Olympic host Bob Costas repeatedly reminded viewers of the controversy and political ramifications of Russia hosting the Winter Games. He tried to position it as public sentiment, but it’s the Left-Stream Media pushing the homosexual agenda at the prodding of GLAAD and other fascist groups.

NBC quickly trotted out leftist Vladimir Pozner to declare Russia a “homophobic” country.

Over at ESPN, homosexual activist/pitbull Jeremy Schaap seethed with anger as he reported that four homosexual activists in Russia “were arrested!” for demonstrating. He was fit to be tied, jaw jutting in bitter rage.

NBC is overly playing the political card by interviewing President B. Hussein Obama Friday night. Obama blathered on about the importance of homosexual athletes in the Olympics.

What’s really ironic is that decades ago, communists in America realized the United States could never be conquered militarily. But it could be undermined by decadence. So they pushed for a cultural revolution to hollow out America’s ideals. They called for easy divorce; cohabitation; mainstreaming homosexual behavior; defiling entertainment (did you see the recent Grammy awards?); pornography; capturing the media, schools, and a political party.

These communists succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. They own the media and the Democratic Party. Pornography has been allowed by the government and the courts to proliferate to a point it is decimating the family. Along with easy divorce. American society is declining, awash in a culture of hedonism. Here’s a partial list of those communist goals for America:

  • Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press.
  • Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
  • Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as “normal, natural, healthy.”
  • Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a “religious crutch.”
  • Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principal of “separation of church and state.”
  • Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.
  • Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the “common man.”
  • Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the “big picture.” Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.

Who helped these goals become reality in America? The so-called “useful idiots,” of course. What is a “useful idiot”? The Urban Dictionary describes it this way:

Term invented in Soviet Russia to describe people who blindly supported the likes of Lenin and Stalin while they committed atrocity after atrocity. Today, it refers to brainwashed liberals and leftists the world over.

And who’s been noticing America’s cultural descent? Certainly President Vladimir Putin and the Russians. Sure, Russia has its own problems — corruption, alcoholism and poverty, among them. But even they are smart enough to know that if their culture is captured by hedonism and the radical homosexual agenda, their culture will collapse from within. Just as ours has.

So over the top in political propaganda is NBC’s Olympic coverage that in a feature report about the Kremlin, it was declared by the reporter as “hallowed ground.” No mention of the Kremlin as the command and control center for the Evil Empire that Ronald Reagan recognized. No mention of the fact that Moscow and the center of the humanistic Soviet government were responsible for the slaughter of over 100 million innocent human beings and the imprisonment of political opponents in Siberia. Just a little too inconvenient for the useful idiots at NBC.

Planned Parenthood’s Un-Parentlike Plan

By Cathi Herrod, President, Center for Arizona Policy

Planned Parenthood has a long and terrible track record in our state.

Not only is the abortion giant responsible for performing the most abortions in Arizona each year, they’ve gone out of their way to block even the most common sense health and safety standards and regulations on the abortion industry.

They’ve objected to things like:

  • Ensuring parents provide notarized parental consent before their child has an abortion.
  • Guaranteeing a woman has the right to not just have an ultrasound before an abortion, but be offered the opportunity to view the image of her preborn child before making a decision.
  • Assuring the dangerous and deadly abortion pill is dispensed in line with the Food and Drug Administration protocol.

It should come as no surprise then that families in Tempe erupted when they discovered that a Planned Parenthood Arizona employee was consulted to help the Tempe Union High School District choose its sexual education curriculum.

Thanks to our pro-life friends across the state, like Arizona Right to Life, 1st Way Pregnancy Center, and Alliance Defending Freedom, the District’s meetings

have been packed with parents and community members objecting to Planned Parenthood’s influence in their schools.

Make no mistake though: Tempe is not the only district on their radar.

From the top down, Planned Parenthood has not hidden their agenda. A recent blog post from the National Planned Parenthood Action Fund said across the country, our nation’s largest purveyor of abortion would be “going on the offensive.”

Locally, Planned Parenthood has hired a new policy director to “work with communities to advocate for reproductive health and rights, and will collaborate with Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona to reach out to voters and legislators to advance a vision of greater access to comprehensive sexuality education, family-planning services, and abortion care.”

In essence, Planned Parenthood has seen all that Gov. Jan Brewer, our legislative leaders, Center for Arizona Policy and our statewide allies have been able to accomplish in recent years, and they want to undermine every bit of it.

And they’re going to start through “community organizing.”

Lovas is Arizona Legislator of the Week

By Tom Jenney, President, Americans for Prosperity, Arizona Director

This past week (Feb 3-7) was an eventful one at the Arizona State Capitol. Several of AFP-Arizona’s priority bills progressed through committee. Below is a brief recap of our successes, and further below is our Legislator of the Week.

HB 2465:  Blunting the Damage from an Internet Sales Tax

HB 2465, sponsored by Rep. J.D. Mesnard, passed out of the House Ways and Means Committee last Monday by a vote of 5-3. This bill would use potential revenue increases to the state of Arizona from passage of the federal Marketplace Fairness Act (which we oppose) to offset harmful state income taxes.   Reps. J.D. Mesnard, Debbie Lesko, Adam Kwasman, Justin Olson, and Warren Petersen deserve our thanks for voting in favor of HB 2465.

HB 2508: Criminal Background Checks for Obamacare Navigators

HB 2508, which passed out of the House Insurance and Retirement Committee on Tuesday, would require persons who want to be Obamacare “navigators” to undergo criminal background checks and other protective hurdles. We must do what we can to ensure that ObamaCare navigators do not compromise the personal financial and medical information of Arizona citizens. Sponsor Rep. Phil Lovas — as well as Reps. John Allen, David Livingston, and Bob Robson — all deserve credit for helping pass the bill by a 4-3-1 (one “not voting”) margin. And, of course, thanks to our activists who kept on them to do so!

TAKE ACTION! Use THIS LINK to email the legislators in your district, and ask them to support HB 2508 when it comes to a floor vote.

HB 2260: The Small Business Bill of Rights

HB2260, or the Small Business Bill of Rights, is quarterbacked at the Legislature by Farrell Quinlan, president of the Arizona chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business, which is an AFP-Arizona partner organization.  The bill requires government regulatory agencies to create a bill of regulatory procedural rights and ensure business owners are informed of those rights.  In a rare moment of bipartisan unanimity, the bill passed out of the House Commerce Committee on Wednesday with a vote of 9-0.  Big thanks to sponsor Rep. Tom Forese and Reps. Adam Kwasman, Stefanie Mach, Debbie McCune-Davis, J.D. Mesnard, Catherine Miranda, Steve Montenegro, Warren Petersen, and T.J. Shope for voting to protect small businesses!

TAKE ACTION! Use THIS LINK to email the legislators in your district, and ask them to support HB 2260, the Small Business Bill of Rights, when it comes to a floor vote.

HCR 2005 — Terminal Patients Compassionate Care Act

A project of the Goldwater Institute, HCR 2005 was held in the House Reform and Human Services Committee on Thursday, February 6 — but will likely be heard this coming Thursday, February 13.  This important bill would place a “Terminal Patients Compassionate Care Act” on the 2014 ballot.  If voters approve the Act, terminally ill patients would be allowed to try drugs that have been deemed safe by the FDA but have not received final FDA approval.  Everyone deserves to be able to try and save their own life, so please take action:

Click HERE to call or email the members of the House Reform and Human Services Committee and tell them to support HCR 2005 when it comes for a vote.

Click HERE to email the legislators in your district, and ask them to support HCR 2005 come to the floor.

SB 1236: A Victory for Arizona’s Children!

SB 1236, sponsored by Sen. Kimberly Yee, passed out of the Senate Education Committee by a 6-2-1 (one “not voting) margin.  The bill seeks to expand eligibility for an Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) — which will allow even more parents to customize their child’s education in the best way for them.  This was a great step for educational freedom in Arizona and Sens. Kimberly Yee, Kelli Ward, Rick Murphy, Al Melvin, David Farnsworth, and Chester Crandell deserve our thanks!

LEGISLATOR OF THE WEEK:  Representative Phil Lovas

Rep. Phil Lovas of Peoria (R-Legislative District 22) is the 2014 legislative session’s first AFP-Arizona Legislator of the Week.  He wins that honor for his hard work supporting important issues like pension reform and especially for his sponsorship of HB 2508 — which will regulate the ObamaCare “navigators” to try to keep criminals and identity thieves from getting access to Arizonan’s sensitive personal information.  Arizona taxpayer activists should give Rep. Lovas a big round of applause for his work defending the interests of hardworking Arizonans.

Dems Say Obamacare Will Liberate Millions from Workplace Drudgery

John Semmens: Semi-News — A Satirical Look at Recent News

Folder2 104Democrats touted a Congressional Budget Office report that projects more than 2 million workers will opt out of full time work because of the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies for unemployed and underemployed persons.

While the Administration’s opponents will try to make this look like bad news, the fact is that work is a disutility,” said Press Secretary Jay Carney. “Everyone knows that leisure is man’s preferred state. By enabling more people to obtain health insurance at government expense, the Affordable Care Act is liberating millions from the drudgery of full time employment.”

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) maintains that “enabling more people to escape the burdens of toil was one of the key objectives of the Act. Ideally, we would’ve liked to extend this same benefit to every American. Unfortunately, some will still be required to work longer hours in order to provide the funds needed to subsidize the benefits we were able to give to those willing to abandon full time jobs.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hailed “the end of job-lock. By leveraging the efforts of those willing to work longer hours we have been able to subsidize the health insurance of those who have better uses for their time. Combined with the expansion of the disability rolls and the extension of unemployment benefits, the Affordable Care Act is helping to create a new class of free agents in our society. It is a dream come true for a growing segment of our population.”

Ironically, the CBO report also projected that in 10 years the number of Americans without health insurance is expected to exceed 30 million—virtually the same number that was cited as a rationale for imposing the Obamacare mandate. “There will always be people who refuse to cooperate with the program,” Carney acknowledged. “Hopefully, the IRS will be able to track them down and fine them for noncompliance.”

In related news, Carney maintained that the $4,000 per year decline in median household income since the start of the Obama Administration is “evidence of an America turning away from materialistic concerns.

Households are taking home less money because the Administration’s policies have helped persuade people that grubbing for dollars is not an appealing way to live one’s life.”

Infrastructure, Not Freedom, Is Key to Economic Growth, Says Biden

Vice-President and potential contender for the 2016 Democratic nomination for President, Joe Biden rejected contentions that individual freedom is crucial to economic growth.

I know a lot of people keep insisting that it is America’s free market and individual rights that account for this country’s phenomenal economic growth, but is that really the case?” Biden asked. “Look at the rapid economic growth achieved by the Soviet Union during the 1930s and 40s. By mobilizing armies of human labor to build canals and mine metals they were able to transform perishable human resources into the durable infrastructure that vaulted the country from a backward agrarian-based economy to a world super power.”

The vice-president wondered whether “their divergence from that strategy might be a factor in Russia’s recent decline from its pinnacle of rivalry with the United States. Perhaps their attempts to emulate our freer markets are misguided.”

Biden suggested that “maybe it’s time we rethink our mindless devotion to individualism in this country. The choices that many individuals make when decisions are left up to them are often frivolous and anti-social. Consumers don’t want to go ‘green’ because it’s more costly. They don’t want to use public transit because it’s less convenient. How long should we allow such selfish concerns to warp our economy?”

Jailed Legislator Defends Himself

Though currently serving a six-month sentence for assaulting a woman who declined to have sex with him, Representative Carlos Henriquez (D-Suffolk) refuses to resign from the Massachusetts House.

First of all, my incarceration is illegal,” Henriquez argued. “Members of the legislature are supposed to have immunity. Secondly, the Ethics Committee’s recommendation that I be removed from office contradicts the vote of the people of my district who are entitled to have the person of their choice represent them. Nowhere in the State Constitution does it say that a person in prison cannot serve in the legislature.”

The representative has suggested that “a six-month leave of absence would best serve the interests of everyone involved. The will of the voters would be respected. The expense of a special election would be avoided. And I could rejoin the legislature refreshed and with a new perspective on the issue of state corrections policy.”

Henriquez, who has been a prominent advocate against gun violence, says there is no inconsistency in his behavior. “If that woman had a gun I’d probably be dead,” he pointed out. “So, I’d say that Massachusetts’ tight control over gun ownership has clearly saved at least one life.”

Congresswoman Proposes Expedited Legislative Procedure

Citing the “unwarranted thwarting of the will of the people by the Republicans in the House,” Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) unveiled what she called “an expedited legislative procedure.” Under this procedure, a so-called “full employment caucus” comprised of Democratic lawmakers will draft Executive Orders and pass them on to President Obama for his signature.

We cannot sit by idly while the GOP uses out-dated clauses of the Constitution to block the initiatives of the Administration,” Jackson said. “By gathering the true representatives of voters into our caucus we can ensure that the President’s will prevails over obstructionism.”

Jackson went on to point out that “as long as everyone is willing to comply with the president’s executive orders they have the same impact as an Act of Congress. We’ll be able to bypass Congressional gridlock and get things moving.”

Included among the items under consideration for this expedited procedure are an increase in the minimum wage, extending unemployment benefits, loosening the restrictions on food stamps, and amnesty for immigrants in this country illegally. “Removing these impediments to prosperity is essential if the president’s vision for America is to be realized,” Jackson asserted.

Senator Cries “Foul” over Campaign Ads

Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC) expressed outrage over a series of campaign ads informing voters of her support for the Affordable Care Act. While not disputing the accuracy of the content, Hagan contended that “the more important question is who is behind these ads.”

Whether I voted for the Affordable Care Act years ago is a moot issue at this point in time,” the Senator claimed. “The past cannot be undone. What matters is the future. The money being put into rehashing the past by the Americans for Prosperity campaign against me is obscuring this crucial fact.”

Instead of allowing themselves to be confused by ‘Monday morning quarterbacking’ of the sort that these ads are undertaking, voters need to focus on what I am promising to do for them if I am reelected,” Hagan urged. “They need to ask themselves if they want to follow the siren song of lower taxes that Americans for Prosperity is trying play for them or do they want to reconfirm the trust they placed in me six years ago.”

IRS Employees to Get Bonuses

The IRS will pay out over $40 million in employee performance bonuses for the year 2013. Commissioner John Koskinen explained that “the bonuses are necessary if we want to attract the kind of people we need at the agency.”

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) called the bonuses “outrageous. Given the fact that the IRS was shown to be targeting conservatives for discriminatory treatment these bonuses send the wrong message.”

The National Treasury Employees Union took issue with Hatch’s view saying that “none of these employees should be punished for faithfully following orders. Senator Hatch’s grievance is with the president and his direct appointees, not the rank-and-file who merely carried out directives received from above.”

Commissioner Koskinen agreed saying that “rather than try to take his ‘pound of flesh’ from these loyal low-level bureaucrats, the Senator, if he has objections that he thinks warrant penalties, should aim them at his real target. If he thinks he has a case he should draft articles of impeachment against the President. The misuse of authority he alleges would appear to be an ‘impeachable offense’ as I understand the term.”

President Says O’Reilly Interview “Crossed the Line”

Bristling from what he characterized as “disrespectful and abusive treatment” he received during an interview, President Obama vowed never to appear on Fox News again.

After I agreed to sacrifice some of my precious time in order to grant Mr. O’Reilly an interview prior to the Super Bowl I was greeted with insistent and intrusive questioning on topics I didn’t want to talk about,” Obama complained. “Worse, my veracity was impugned. Rather than just accept my word, Mr. Reilly seemed determined to demand some sort of independent verification, some sort of external evidence. I am not accustomed to being treated this way.”

The president said he will be conferring with advisers “to ascertain whether there are steps we can take to prevent a recurrence of this kind of disrespect. I’m certain that Mr. Reilly has done things that he’d rather keep private. If he were more clearly apprised of the risks he faces I am confident he will not repeat his errors.”

Outing Arizona’s Congressional Communists

By Trevor Loudon, New Zeal BlogSpot, July 27, 2013

Arizona has not one, but three Communist Party affiliated Congress members.

How could a libertarian leaning state like Arizona have any communist affiliated representatives?

Most Arizonans have no idea that Arizona even has a Communist Party local.

Lorenzo Torrez

Lorenzo Torrez

It all started with Lorenzo Torrez (who died in 2012), one of Arizona’s most influential ever politicians. Never heard of him? Neither have 90% of Arizonans.

In 1974, Torrez moved with his family to Tucson where he served as chair of the Arizona Communist Party for more than 30 years. He also led the party’s Chicano Equality Commission and was a member of the CPUSA National Committee.

He built the Arizona CP into an influential organization in all the progressive movements of Arizona.

Torrez helped establish the communist run Salt of the Earth Labor College in Tucson, which continues today.

Steve Valencia, president of the labor college, told the People’s World, “Lorenzo changed the political landscape of Arizona. For him, the liberation of the working class and equality for the Mexican American people were inherently tied together.”

Torrez was also a “pioneer in the struggle for Mexican American political representation,” Valencia added. “I always say: Before Ed Pastor and Raul Grijalva, there was Lorenzo Torrez.”

Pastor and Grijalva are Arizona’s first two Mexican Americans members of the U.S. Congress. But Torrez ran for Congress before they ran, and also ran against Republican Senator Barry Goldwater.

“Lorenzo told us it is time for these majority Latino districts to be represented by a Mexican American,” said Valencia. “He wanted voters to see a Latino name on the ballot.”

When Pastor declared his candidacy, Torrez rallied the Tucson Communist Party club to join in the effort. Pastor’s victory in 1991, set the stage for Grijalva’s election in 2002.

Today, Ed Pastor and Raul Grijalva are members of the far left Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Grijalva was involved with the Communist Party well before 2002, as this article he wrote for the  Party’s People’s World in 1993 proves.

aaaaaaccccckkkk

Both Pastor and Grijalva have been champions of the illegal immigrants “rights” movement – a movement that Lorenzo Torrez helped to found in California and Arizona and then helped to coordinate across the entire Southwest.

The third Arizona Rep. with provable Communist Party ties is Phoenix-based freshman Kyrsten Sinema.

While she likes to pretend moderation these days, Sinema is a hard core leftist with past ties to several extremist groups – including of course the Arizona Communist Party.

Here she is in 2003, putting her name to the Arizona Communist Party’s May Day greetings page – right over that of Lorenzo Torrez and Steve Valencia.
