They Call it Marry-Land
It's official. There will be a marriage referendum on the Maryland ballot. Voters will be able to repeal the bill passed by the liberal governor and legislature in February. Thanks to the thousands of man-hours put in by state volunteers (including some FRC staffers), the State Board of Elections announced yesterday that the Maryland Marriage Alliance (MMA), led by Derek McCoy, had not only met--but exceeded--the number of valid signatures needed to put a same-sex marriage repeal on the ballot. The Board has verified 70,039 signatures so far, and only rejected 4,272--which is an incredible testament to Derek's volunteer training. As we've mentioned before, Maryland has very rigid standards for signature validation, and it's rare for organizations to submit enough names to survive their scrutiny. That may explain why the last time Maryland voters successfully petitioned a referendum was in 1992. As it stands now, MMA is on track to shatter the previous record of 132,000 signatures. Now that'smomentum.And it's not just in Maryland. Supporters are overwhelming Preserve Marriage Washington with signatures to repeal their state's counterfeit marriage law in November. According to Joseph Backholm, who heads up the effort, the coalition has submitted more than 200,000 signatures, breaking the state's personal best for referendum numbers. Both states need our help. Even ESPN, a sports network, is continually plugging the homosexual agenda. Many left-stream media and H activists still insist that homosexuality is genetic and fixed. That was debunked in the 1990's, but inconvenient news travels slow ... or sometimes not at all on the left side of the ledger.*****Very few homosexuals marry in states where it is legal. That's because same-sex "marriage" is not the real goal of homosexual activists.Homosexual activist Michele Signorile urges homosexuals “to fight for same-sex marriage and its benefits and then, once granted, redefine the institution of marriage completely, to demand the right to marry, not as a way of adhering to society’s moral codes but rather to debunk a myth and radically alter an archaic institution. The most subversive action lesbian and gay men can undertake . . . is to transform the notion of ‘family’ entirely.”Paula Ettelbrick, former legal director of the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, says the same: “Being queer is more than setting up house, sleeping with a person of the same gender, and seeking state approval for doing so . . . Being queer means pushing the parameters of sex and sexuality, and in the process transforming the very fabric of society.”So here you have 2 percent of the population struggling withs same-sex attraction. But it's not the same 2 percent every day. That changes, because for some people, their situation is fluid and subject to change.And now President Obama and left-wing politicians beholden to rich homosexual activists for boat loads of campaign cash want to enshrine laws around this small shifting island of humanity? It makes no sense. They're basing their radical goals on shifting sand and threatening to undermine our society, out of pure selfishness. There certainly isn't any compelling state interest or any conventional wisdom at the root of this radical agenda.
